Had a few hours to kill in the afternoon before we had to leave for the hockey game Saturday night, so that gave D some time to chill after his drive and we watched the two DVR’d Friday night shows that we have in common – Chuck and Fringe – then headed over to Mickey D’s for a quick dinner before the game, then drove over to the RBC Center for the game.

Don’t go to many hockey games anymore, this was our first in a couple of years (really sad when you consider that when the team first moved here, I was going to 2 games a month, while they were still playing and hour and a half away in Greensboro, and coughed up $3000 for playoff tickets several years ago. But that’s a blog post for a later day.) And the team did NOT disappoint Saturday night. By the end of the first period, they’d already scored the first goal and thrown down the gloves for not just one but TWO fights. Now, I’m NOT a violent person as a rule, but *puts on bad Cockney accent* I DO love a good hockey fight, I do! The Canes scored two more unanswered goals to make it 3 to nothing, and then essentially fell apart in the 3rd period, where the Pens then scored three unanswered goals – one of which on OUR power play; still think the team should decline those when they get them – to tie the game up 3-3. Made for a nailbiter of a third period, until the RIGHT Stahl finally scored a goal to make it 4-3, and then they got another one to end it 5-3. Whew. “That’s what hockey is all about, Charlie Brown.”

Watched a couple of old Batman episodes that we’d dvr’d while at the game after we got back, and then watched Graham Norton (great lineup – Johnny Depp, Ricky Gervaise, and Snow Patrol) before crashing for the night.

Next morning I was up and put in my 5 miles on the stationary bike first thing, then D and I spent a couple of hours hauling the first batch (of many to come) of oak leaves down to the curb. Normally not my favorite way to spend a Sunday, but for some reason don’t seem to mind it so much when I’m hauling leaves with D. Feels very domesticated, like how it’ll be after we’re married.

Then after we put in our manual labor for the afternoon, we hunkered down with the Wii for an our of Price Is Right Decades, a few hours with Wii Party, then came back after dinner for some Wii Jeopardy, and then a half hour of 100 pin bowling in Wii Sports Resort (about all my post-surgical gut could handle before it started to ache from the effort of flailing around with the Wiimote) to kill some time before Amazing Race came on. Then after Amazing Race, D. headed for home and I hopped on the PC to update the Barrowman Tour site and found that GREAT new Cardiff YouTube clip of partner SCOTT on stage singing Rhinestone Cowboy with JB. What a great way to end the night and the weekend.

Wasn’t planning on adding a blog post here, I’m getting ready to move my site to a different hosting provider, and backed up all my content last weekend preparing for the move, but figured why not, I’ll just do another backup and be ready to go later.

My Motorola Triumph came in yesterday, a day later than the estimated arrival date I got from Amazon. No big deal, I know it’s an approximate date, but usually Amazon beats their approximate arrival date by a couple of days, can’t remember when something arrived late. (Had to laugh though, I was following the tracking info, and it started out about 9 hours from here, in Kentucky. By the end of the first day, it had gone further NORTH and was now 12 hours away. Go figure. Next day? It ended up in Charlotte, about 3 hours SOUTH of here. Finally got to Raleigh on the estimated delivery date, but too late to be delivered. So it got here the next day. Would have been faster for me to just drive up there and pick it up as far out of the way it went getting here, LOL.) But again, no big deal, didn’t have time to do anything with it yesterday anyway.

Opened up the package this AM, figuring I’d activate it before work, then tinker with it at lunch time. HA! Per the manual: “Step One: Install battery and charge.” Whoops. The Optimus V instructions actually said that THAT phone had enough charge to do the activation, THEN we were supposed to plug it in and charge it the rest of the way. Sort of figured the Motorola would be the same way. Guess not, huh.

So I left it charging for the day today, and after we got done with our TV watching binge for the night, sat down, got it activated via the website without a hitch. Then figured out the IP address of the phone so I could add it to my “approved” IP list on my home WiFi network, and got that working.

Then came the fun of all the updates and app downloading: First up, Silent Boot, to shut up that annoying Virgin Mobile boot up sound. Then did all the updates from the Android market of all the preinstalled apps. Added Remote Web Desktop (one of the few programs I’ve liked well enough to pay for, makes it easy to access my phone content on my PC.) Then went to install the Netflix app, only to remember that I’ve put my Netflix account on hold temporarily, so no streaming at home or on my pc or *sob* on my phone either. Wah. Reinstalled Thickbuttons, Barcode Scanner, was able to install Google Earth, Firefox, and Adobe Flash (none of which were Optimus V friendly)

Then downloaded the Amazon App Store (love it, an app to get more apps! LOL) and Amazon MP3. Tried to download Jenga, which crashed the Optimus every time I tried to install it on THAT phone, and it works on the Motorola. Sweet! Then started going through my list of Amazon Freebies of the Day that I’ve ordered each day they were free, and started downloading a select few of them (I’ve got 200+ that I’ve “ordered” but not all I want to put on the phone at any one time)

Not seeing Fireball Deluxe in my Amazon list, nor Apps Organizer (which I love to death, keeps all my zillion apps, well, organized, into categories), and must have gotten Apps Backup, Cool Reader and E-Reader, Get Glue, Zinio, QuickPic, ComicStrips, GhostTown elsewhere. And a MUST have before Friday night, the Fringe Glyph Translator, to convert all those funky images before the commercial breaks on Fringe into their respective 5 letter words.

Man, but Peggle is taking forever to download, even on WiFi. As soon as I get that, I’m going to bed, and will download the rest of what I’m missing at lunch tomorrow.

(And yes, I noticed that out of everything I’ve mentioned about the phone, in this and previous posts, about how it operates, one thing that never comes up is how it handles phone calls. LOL. But I almost never use it for that, which is why that Virgin Mobile $25/month unlimited text/data plan with just the 300 minutes is so perfect for me. Essentially, I treat it as a PDA, that just happens to be able to make calls when I need to, which is rarely – don’t think I’ve ever gone over 30 minutes in any given month since I’ve had it. So as long as it can make them when I need them to, it doesn’t need to do much else so far as its phone abilities go.)

So as a rule, it’s been acceptable phone. Gets the job done. And it was the best one that Virgin Mobile offered when I bought it earlier this year. 

But THEN, I made the mistake of going to my Virgin Mobile account to update my credit card info last week, then peeking into their “phones and plans” area. Whoops! The Optimus V is not their best offering any more. Now they’ve got a Motorola Triumph. With a faster processor. And a much bigger storage capacity. And a bigger screen. AND it will play flash video. PLUS it’s got two cameras compared to just the one on the OV. AND a flash for the still camera, which OV doesn’t have. AND HD video that you can play back via an HDMI cable directly into your TV set. In short, it’s like the OV, on steroids.*insert Tim Allen Tool Time grunt here: ARGH ARGH ARGH!*

Reviews on it have been mixed, but it seems like if you get a good phone right out of the box (which seems to be a problem on occasion, some folks have gotten real lemons right from the manufacturer), people have been happy with it.

So after hemming and hawing for a week (and missing Best Buy’s sale on that very phone in the process), and doing my usual comparison shopping, helped by the handy dandy plug in for FireFox called Invisible Hand which pops up when you’re shopping for something to let you know if there’s a cheaper price online anywhere, I found myself at Amazon. Invisible Hand told me it was cheaper on eBay, but I tend to like the return policies better from a known company vs someone on ebay where you’re not sure who you’re buying from. Plus if I put it on my Amazon store card, I’ve got something like 4 months same as cash to pay it off. THOUGHT I could use the nearly $50 in reward points from my Visa card towards it, but since I wasn’t using the Visa to pay for it, apparently that’s not an option. So did the next best thing. Used the $30 gift card that my sister got me for my birthday in July, put THAT towards the phone instead, saving my rewards points for my birthday purchase when I make it. Amazon seemed happy with that. So I got $30 off, free shipping, and 4 months same as cash. Nice deal. Ordered it this afternoon.

And one other thing I like about Virgin Mobile… If you’ve got a phone plan with them, and they change their rates, as long as you keep your same phone plan, you get to keep it at the same rates. So apparently even though VM raised their $25/mo plan to $35/mo recently, even if I swap out my OV for the Triumph, I still get to keep my $25/month plan. Sweet.

Can’t wait for it to come in so I can play. Fortunately it’s still an Android phone, so the learning curve on it won’t be to steep. AND all the apps that I already have via Amazon’s app store and the Android App Market should work with it as well (including, hopefully, the ones that were supposed to work but just didn’t like the Optimus V. So we’ll see.

A Few Favorite Games:

Just recently had my SD storage card crash, so had to reformat and reinstall a lot of my apps. Which was okay, had a lot on there that really didn’t need to be there anymore, so it gave the card a good cleaning. The only game that I’ve not reinstalled that really SHOULD be on my list of favorite games is Plants vs Zombies. LOVE that game, have it on my PC, my NintendoDS, and when Amazon’s App Store gave it away as a freebie, downloaded it for the phone as well. Unfortunately though, while the game was able to be put on the SD card, apparently the saved game file was not, so when I reached the end of the game for the first time, the saved game file was huge, and ate up too much space on my phone, so I uninstalled the whole game. 

But these games are the ones I tent to go back to over and over again. They’re all fun, but I tend to play Angry Birds Rio, Fire Ball Deluxe, Gem Spinner, Peggle, and Fruit Ninja the most. All of which are either free games, or were given away by Amazon as freebies at one point or another. 

Newly Found “Useful Tools”:

Got quite a few of those. Apps Organizer is what set up my massive assortment of phone apps into the useful categories you see here. You decide what categories you want, and which apps go in them, and voila, a nice organized phone desktop. Still using the Amazon App Store for their freebies of the day. Droid of the Day is pretty good, it pops up and suggests a free app every day. App2SD Pro is one of those apps I tried as a freebie, liked, then Amazon gave away the paid version. Makes it easy to move apps from the phone to the SD card, something very handy with the Optimus’s limited storage space. App Backup saved my bacon when my SD card crashed. I’d backed up all the apps with that program, then when I moved the contents of my SD card to my PC to reformat, I was able to reinstall most programs that I wanted from the backup I’d done. Converter is kind of handy, any kind of measurement you can think of that you might want to convert to some other format, it can probably handle. I order from AmazonUK a lot, and it does a fast conversion from dollars to pounds, among other things. Useful and free (I think it might have been a Droid of the Day app, actually). Also on the phone is Cool Reader and eReader. Handles various and sundry types of ebooks and documents. Fringe Glyph Translator is a purely fun app. If you watch Fringe on Friday nights, and you see all those funky symbols with the dots next to them at each commercial break, those actually DO spell something different each episode. Makes me want to go back and watch Seasons 1-3 to see what I missed in those codes. 

GetGlue is probably, especially with the new TV season starting, one of my most used apps. Make it easy to tweet about what I’m watching, listening to, and reading, and earn stickers in the process. Kind of addicting. The two apps in the bottom row on each end – Remote Web and WiFi File Explorer – are both essentially the same thing, they allow you to wireless connect the contents of your phone to your PC to transfer files, use your phone cam as a webcam, all sorts of stuff. It’s how I got the screen caps of my apps from my phone to my PC. I actually paid for Remote Web and had been using it for a while, until Amazon gave away WiFi File Explorer. Now I use them both until I decide which one I like better. The app in the bottom row second column is Shoot Me, which is supposed to only work on rooted phones, but works just fine on my unrooted Optimus. Run it in the background, if you want to screencap your screen, just shake the phone, and instant screencap. Yes, it’s what I used to screencap my apps. And last but not least on that screen is Tweetcaster. I’d mentioned before that the free version was my favorite Twitter app, well you guessed it, Amazon gave away the paid version as a freebie so now I’m running the full version and have never looked back.

Other favorite apps are QuckPic, a replacement for the default Gallery. Comic Strips, a new one I just added that lets you collect and share some of your favorite comic strips from the paper, like Scary Gary and Argyle Sweater. GhostTown is essentially a music player that lets you search YouTube for videos, and plays them back as music. Kinda nifty. Roku Remote and WDTV Media Player are substitute remotes for, yes, my Roku box (currently used for streaming movies at Netflix and Amazon on Demand) and my Western Digital media player box, which lets you plug in a hard drive and play back almost any video type you can think of on your TV set. Great for all those series episodes that would take up too many DVDs to burn. Tune In Radio Pro is another paid app that Amazon gave away as a freebie. I’d been using the freebie version to pick up Internet radio stations, like the various BBC stations or formerly local CA stations like KFOG. The paid version is essentially the same, only it also includes a recorder if you want to save any of the radio station broadcasts. I use it a lot. And Zinio works in conjuction with the PC app to download either free or paid digital versions of magazines to either your phone or your PC hard drive. Once you’ve downloaded them, you can view them on either. Have only used it a few times so far, but it seems pretty well made.

Well, that be pretty much the majority of what apps I use fairly regularly. Given that Amazon gives away a freebie every day, I’ve got quite a list of apps still available to me that I’ve not actually installed yet, but they’re there if I need them.

The start of the fall tv season is when our DVR (which thankfully has two tuners, otherwise we’d never keep up) gets a workout. We tend to watch nearly everything new at least once, then eliminate the crap shows from the schedule and end up with a reasonable number of shows to watch.

The only problem this fall? Not a whole lot of crap shows to speak of. LOL. We skipped H8R right off the bat, as well as The Playboy Club and Charlies Angels, plus a couple of other shows on the CW that just plain did nothing for us. And no, are not watching X-Factor. But have tried pretty much every thing else so far, and most shows are pretty good. So have started dropping show that are okay, but not great. Definitely deleted off the DVR’s on screen scheduler: Pan-Am (bummer, that’s the airline that flew me to Europe in 1984! ), Two Broke Girls, and Up All Night. Not sure about (we’ll watch for a second week and then decide): Unforgettable and Gifted Man. New Girl was supposed to be THE new comedy of the season, and jury is still out on that one too. It was cute and quirky, but it may lose out just due to the sheer volume of other good shows airing.

What’s funny is the number of shows that we thought we’d just watch to see just how awful they were, and they turned out to be pretty good. Didn’t think I’d like Ringer, or Revenge, or Whitney. I’d heard Whitney was supposed to be funny, but the previews looked kind of obnoxious, so we only tuned in to see how bad it would be, and found ourselves laughing several times in just the first couple of minutes. So definitely giving it another go.

A few more new shows that I’m liking right after the first ep: Persons of Interest and Suburbitory. Prime Suspect is pretty good too, although, if they don’t make the cops a bit more likeable, may drop it. Life’s too short to spend an hour with people on TV you don’t like. LOL.

Between old shows and new shows, the busiest night for the DVR has got to be Wednesday. There’s something on nearly every network that night. CBS has Survivor and Criminal Minds. ABC has their 2 hours of half hour comedies (The Middle, Modern Family, Suburbitory, and Happy Endings), plus Revenge at 10. NBC has Harry’s Law, and Law&Order SVU. Plus for 4 weeks BBC America has season 2 of Luther. Have all 4 eps saved on a hard drive from an internet download, but it’s been so long since it aired on BBC, not sure which drive it’s on. LOL.  So Wednesday, we usually end up with the DVR recording on both tuners AND our older DVD burner recording a third network to RAM disc (just like a VCR, only on an erasable DVD vs tape).

Then there’s all the returning favorites: Good Wife, Castle, Parenthood, Mike & Molly, Big Bang Theory, Fringe, The Mentalist, Blue Bloods, Supernatural. Haven on SyFy is still running from the summer season, soon to be replaced with Sanctuary after this week I think. And Doctor Who is just finishing up, to be replaced I guess with Bedlam (which naturally, we’ll have to try, along with American Horror Story on Fox). Just got hooked on a couple of the BBCA British comedies, Friday Night Dinner and Outnumbered, hope those are coming back.

Whew. Yeah, kind of sad how much TV we watch. Not everyone here watches every one of them, but we kind of split the difference.

And still find ourselves with enough time to watch Jeopardy every night.

In another moment of utter geekiness, I thought I’d see if I could export from the Joomla website a list of all my webpages within the site and what their page ranking was based on the number of hits each has received. Then pull it into my WordPress blog as a post. Lo and behold, “there’s an app for that!”

And as expected, no big surprise here, the John Barrowman pages are naturally the most popular, taking up 7 spots in the top 10 places (out of those, the video page has a wide lead, with over 7800 page views). U2 places second with two, and my 2008 Lunar Eclipse page coming in 3rd. (Oddly enough, my photo page of Creepy Crawlies doesn’t seem to rank quite as well, LOL).

THIS is why I keep telling my boss we should drop John’s name into our company website; nothing brings in the traffic quite as fast as that ole Barrowman name.

Well, that was a fast 10 weeks. I posted earlier today about the show because I didn’t want to have to worry about accidentally posting spoilers for the Torchwood finale, then I realized tonight, as I’m wanting to yammer on at length about the finale on The Twitter, and couldn’t out of respect for the folks in the UK who for the most part, don’t get to watch it until next Thursday, that it’s my blog, I can spoiler if I want to. So you have been warned. Definitely spoilers ahead.

But for those who have seen the show and want a place to comment about it, there is a comment section at the bottom of the page.

Oh look! Stickers! Earned the whole set from the show. Wonder how long it’ll take for Get Glue to send me the hard copies.
(Including them here in case the “read more” link isn’t hiding the balance of the post, and it apparently isn’t, you still have time to leave before getting to the spoilery stuff.)

Just a couple of short random thoughts that would have really been tweets had I said the heck with it and posted them there anyhow.

I’d have to go and rewatch the show again to post LOTS of specifics that I liked, but for the most part, I was again impressed by the writing and how in the middle of all this suspenseful action and drama, they still manage, in true Torchwood style, to throw in a smattering of rather funny deadpan one-liners. That IS one thing about season four that hadn’t changed from prior seasons, and one of the things that I like about the show. So I’m glad they kept up with it.

The one that keeps jumping out at me, I almost fell of the couch when I heard it during the 10pm show, is when Jilly and Gwen are catfighting in the elevator, and Gwen says as she’s repeatedly punching Jilly in the face for emphasis: “How much… bloody lipstick … can you wear!?!”

And right after Rex gets shot, then totally blows Jack & Gwen’s minds when seconds after Jack pronounces him dead, he comes back to life; I loved the way they echoed each other in turn with “What?” “What?” “What?” For some reason that just struck me as really funny.

And just for the record, despite comments to the contrary in interviews, Jack DOES sing in Torchwood!

IMHO, they really could have done without the whole Oswald story line. I kept waiting for him to really become crucial to the plot, and he never really did, not even in the finale. Maybe he was more there to be there for Jack to reflect and bounce things off of, and also give Jilly someone to play off of as well. But so far as plot goes, they really could have done without him. Yeah, he was there to blow things up at the end, but the Families were planning on doing that anyway. Bill Pullman did a fabulous job playing him though. I’ll never look at Lone Star in Spaceballs in quite the same way.

Loved how Charlotte got hers at the end. I was SO hoping she wouldn’t get away with being the mole.  And Rex’s comment just prior to finding out who it was, about the password being where he got donuts, was kind of funny.

One thing I did have pegged, was that Jack was NOT going to die at the end. Figured that if the rest of the world went mortal, he’d become IMmortal again, so when all was said and done, he’d come back to life. Gwen probably even could have left him to be blown up, given that he’s been blown to bits before, and reassembled afterwards, lol. so yeah, I did figure Jack was safe. And Rex too, since they share blood now. Speaking of which, that transfusion? Brilliant twist! Loved it.

And now, having seen all 10 episodes, the finale is probably my second favorite, since it did a great job of wrapping things up while still leaving us ready for a season 5. First favorite though, STILL is Immortal Sins with Jack and Angelo. Loved seeing Jack in a relationship, and that part of the episode was pretty self contained with a beginning and an end, which per my last post, I do prefer the TW eps to be that way, vs these multi episode arcs. And well, it was just HOT! LOL. 

More comments to follow, but it’s late, and I at least wanted to post the ones that stood out to me off the top of my head.

No surprise that the Barrowman pages are the most popular on my website. (I keep telling my boss that if he wants to increase the page hits to the company website, to just let me sprinkle the name John Barrowman liberally here and there throughout the site, and the number of site visitors will skyrocket, LOL). Didn’t start my website with the idea that it would become 80% Barrowman related, but discovered him in Torchwood at the same time I started playing with Joomla as a CMS, so essentially learned how to design webpages in Joomla by making and breaking and fixing all those Barrowman pages.

But can’t figure out exactly how 21 people [edit: 56 people! since I first posted this] so far today found their way to the JB media pages on the site from FACEBOOK. I do have an account there, but rarely use it for anything, almost never post, only signed up for it so that nobody else would swipe my user name when they changed over to real name screen names.

Certainly haven’t been posting my JB site updates there, at least not that I know of. So it’s a bit of a mystery. A lot of the other referrals make perfect sense: Twitter, Brizzly, LiveJournal… I tend to make mention of my site updates to those three fairly regularly. But Facebook is like the forgotten skeleton in my internet closet, just never think to post regular updates there.

So again, it’s a puzzlement.

Do LIKE Google Analytics, though. Gives me a general idea of who is visiting what page, how they found it (keyword searches are particularly amusing sometimes; someone recently found their way to my blog by doing a search for “dudley douchebag”, a reference from Desperate Housewives),  how many times they visit, how long they stay, and from what location. The location info in particular is of interest, love seeing how many people from other countries come and visit.

And well, it must be said that I DO find it rather *squee*-rific when I find a visitor to the Barrowman pages coming from a location where I know the man himself is at the time. The realist in me knows it could be and most likely IS anyone else, but yes, my inner fangirl did do a mental happy dance when I got hits from Glasgow and Manchester while JB was there shooting Tonight’s The Night, or more recently, hits from towns in Spain during the three weeks he was vacationing there, particularly when I’ve never gotten hits from Spain before. Was it JB? Prolly not. But if it makes the inner fangirl happy to think so, who am I to burst her bubble?

Of course on the flip side, if the Powers That Be DO visit the site, there’s always that concern that I’ll get some sort of cease and desist notification from them, since I AM going a bit rogue by capturing and streaming UK video to worldwide audiences. But I look at it this way, it’s a win/win for everyone. Non UK fans get to see video they’d never get to see otherwise, and it’s promoting the heck out of the BBC, ITV, JB, etc. Essentially free advertising for them. And it’s not like I’m making any money off of it or even attempting to. So one would hope that I’m not ruffling any feathers with my site content.

In any case, here I am. I signed up for a new domain, and have a new site started and this new and improved blog. Next on the agenda I guess is to link the site and the blog, and put a few new pages on the website.
